Context

Bangladesh is a low-income country in South Asia with a population of 160 million, 66.5% of which live in rural areas. Despite the rapid socio-economic growth, around 18% of the population (36% in rural areas) still lives below the poverty line. Almost everyone will experience impaired vision or an eye condition during their lifetime and require eye care services. Getting primary eye health care remains a challenge especially for the vulnerable population in the rural area.

Supported Project

In 2024-2025, l'Occitane en Provence Korea supported Heart to Heart Foundation in its project in Bangladesh aiming to enhance accessibility to integrated eye care services based on the primary health facility. To do so, Heart to Heart Foundation adopts two inclusive approaches:

  • a Vision Center-based primary eye care service
  • a Community Clinic-based primary eye care service (with a Mobile Vision Center).

The project also plans on providing training to the Vision Center Nurses as well as advocating for integrated eye-care by networking with NGOs.

Thanks to this initiative, Safiqul Islam, a 13 year-old boy, was able to go to the Jolshin Community Clinic to receive help: "The doctor carefully checked my eyes and found I had vision problems and dry eye. They provided me with free prescription spectacles and medicine. Now, I feel relieved and happy that I can finally see clearly. I am grateful for this camp because otherwise, I wouldn’t have received the help I needed. I will study hard and become an eye doctor one day, just like the kind doctor I met today."
