Context
Approximately 26.3 million people in Africa have visual impairments, 5.9 million of whom are estimated to be blind. Those are cases that can often be cured but for women, rural communities or marginalised group, treatment is rarely accessible. Mozambique is currently one of the least-developed countries in the world: its health system is fragile, and the country ranks very low on the UN’s Human Development Index (183 out of 192 countries) with nearly 50% of its population still living in poverty.
Supported Project
In 2024-2025, L'OCCITANE UK funded a Sightsavers' project focused on developing a team of qualified eye health professionals at Nampula Central Hospital. This program seeks to adress the barriers preventing women and people with disabilities from accessing eye health services. In that respect, Sightsavers are holding targeted eye screening events to reach those marginalised persons. Community screening are conducted in rural and remote areas to ensure that no one is left behind. Finally, transports are provided for all patients in these areas to take them to the exams and to the hospitals for further treatment. In partnership with Blind People's Organisations (BPOs) and Organisations for People with Disabilities (OPDs), this project advocates for improved access to eye healthcare for people with disabilities.
