Context
Congenital cataracts and retinopathy of prematurity (both treatable) are the main causes of blindness in Latin America, accounting for approximately 40% of the cases. In view of this situation, the prevention of preventable and curable blindness is among the objectives of the global proposals of WHO (World Health Organization) in the field of vision.
Supported Project
In 2024-2025, L'OCCITANE Brazil supported a Caviver project as part of the initiative "Vision 20/20" launched by the WHO in 1999 aiming at preventing blindness. The Blindness Prevention Program is intended for the care and monitoring of children and adolescents, between 0 and 15 years old, to curb the cases of congenital cataract, congenital glaucoma and retinopathy of prematurity in the state of Ceará. Several activities are carried out such as visual acuity tests, ophthalmological treatment to identify eye disease, surgical treatment and assistance in visual rehabilitation. In addition, social monitoring is offered to the families of children assisted in a situation of social vulnerability. The project is led by a mutlidisciplinary team of clinical ophthalmologists, surgeons, therapists, nurses etc. Finally, the Program seeks to disseminate knowledge in the area of visual care in order to increase early identification and treatment and to reduce cases of blindness.
