Context
Local poultry accounts for 86% of livestock in Burkina Faso. Poultry is everywhere in rural areas, as it provides an important source of income for farming families, and plays a major role in social rituals. Local poultry farming has great potential to create wealth and decent jobs in both rural and urban areas. Unlike poultry farming, which requires a secure access to land property, physical strength and sometimes a high level of investment, local poultry farming is ideal for both men and women as few resources are required.
However, as it is the case with all production activities in rural areas, even though women play a crucial role in poultry farming, their involvement in decision-making and access to resources has long been restricted.
Supported Project
In 2024-2025, the L'Occitane en Provence Fund supported La Bicyclette's project aiming to improve the income and living conditions of poultry farmers in Burkina Faso.
To safekeep remunerative purchase prices for small-scale farmers, La Bicyclette is working to position itself as a key brand on the local poultry market in Ouagadougou. It markets whole local chickens slaughtered in its modern slaughterhouse in Ouagadougou. Beforehand, La Bicyclette trains farmers and helps them to optimise their upbringing methods so that they can buy back their poultry at a price higher than the local market one, thereby enabling them to increase their income. The project works to:
- develop a poultry feed formula that reduces farmers' production costs by 25%.
- train 200 farmers, 40% of whom are women, in the specific Bicyclette protocol incorporating the new feed.
- set up new farmers' clubs.
- certify the slaughter centre to open up new markets.
- position the brand and boost sales.
