Context
The incidence and prevalence of myopia around the world and in Malaysia has shown a significant rise in the recent decades. Sarawak is separated from Peninsular Malaysia by the South China Sea and the state economy is less diversified and still heavily dependent upon the export of primary commodities when compared to Malaysia overall. This project targets children from 4 to 17 years old as well as adults recovering froma cataract operation.
Supported Project
In 2024-2025, L'OCCITANE en Provence Malaysia supported Sarawak General Hospita in its project aiming to provide free glasses to low income and indigent people of Sarawak in order to prevent the risk of amblyopia and low vision in children and help the adults to see clearer. The project will be delivered through a network of static and mobile services around the state. It involves hospitals and 3 health clinics with optometry services located in major towns in Sarawak. Visual screenings are conducted throughout the year on patients complaining of a blurred vision and free glasses are handed out to adults to help them read after cataract operations. At the same time, Amblyopia & Vision Impairment Screening (AVIS) for pre-school chidlren are carried out to enable early intervention.
