Context
On a global scale, according to the United Nations, the proportion of the population aged 65 or over is set to rise from 10% in 2022 to 16% in 2050. Furthermore, as the population ages, the average life expectancy of the world's population is expected to rise to 77.2 years in 2050. Consequently, healthcare and care for the aging population must be a top priority! Among the diseases associated with aging, eye disease directly affects the mobility and quality of life of the elderly, particularly in Taiwan, where the elderly account for more than half (57%) of the visually impaired population.
According to research carried out in the country, glaucoma and macular retinal diseases are the main causes of blindness. Among Taiwan's visually impaired population, up to 90% of blindness is due to acquired factors, but in reality, over 80% of visual impairment is preventable. Over 80% of the elderly have insufficient knowledge and concepts of eye care, and almost 50% of them need to actively undergo regular eye examinations. If early detection is carried out, the risk of potential blindness will be considerably reduced.
Supported Project
In 2023-2025, L'OCCITANE Taiwan supports the Light of Love Association's project to promote eye health in local communities in Taiwan. Free eye screenings are held to detect potential eye diseases early. In addition, educational events are held to highlight the importance of eye health and raise awareness of early self-screening procedures for eye care, including glaucoma and retinal macular degeneration.
The project encompasses everything from volunteer training to setting up eye care stations in the community for seniors to learn about eye care through games and activities. It involves hospital ophthalmologists and other eye care professionals to improve eye care support capacity to reduce the continued occurrence of eye injuries among seniors.
The project aims to actively contribute to the creation of a community eye care network, which will effectively address the lack of eye care resources in remote communities. It continues to promote the concept of saccadic eye movement to make eye training increasingly popular and universal, so that everyone can learn to operate, promote eye health and relieve fatigue.
