Context

In 2013, multiple large fires burned hundreds of thousands of acres of woodlands in the Tuolumne Watershed area, devastating several communities. Unfortunately, there has been very little natural regeneration in this location. Often with wildfires, the sites get overrun with invasive species before natural regeneration can occur. Many of the seeds and cones are also destroyed, minimizing natural regeneration.

Supported Project

In 2024-2025, L'OCCITANE en Provence USA funded One Tree Planted's Rim Fire Reforestation project. This four-year programm is designed to return mixed conifer forests to the natural landscape, thereby protecting water quality and re-establishing habitat for native species. The wildfires ravaged thousands of acres of the natural landscape, destroying the habitat and complex ecosystems of local flora and fauna. By planting trees, the habitats and ecosystems can be re-established at an accelerated rate and the landscape and soils can be quickly re-stabilized to reduce erosion and landslides. All of these impacts help to regenerate healthy forests and ultimately benefit all local biodiversity. Restoring mixed conifer forests in the watershed area reduces erosion, increases structure and thermal cover for wildlife species, lowers water temperature in riparian areas, and increases carbon sequestration. It also filters precipitation and prevents the overloading of sediment and nutrients in the Tuolumne River, which is a key source of water for California.
