This project is supported by L'OCCITANE en Provence Australia.
Context
Australia has the highest proportion of unique plant species on Earth as 88% of its species are found nowhere else on the planet. Protecting and restoring Australia's endemic plants species and ecosystems has an enormous impact on gobal biodiversity. This project will help to restore one of Australia's biodiversity hotspots. Ongoing degradation of ecosystems, historical land clearing and the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disaster events are a significant risk to biodiversity in this region.
Supported Project
In 2024-2025, L'OCCITANE en Provence Australia funded the Hindmarsh Valley Restoration Porject aiming at restoring one of Australia's key biodiversity hostpots: Mount Loft/ Kangoroo Island. Home to 445 threatened plant species in South Australia, this site and its biodivertsity are threatened by ongoing degradation of ecosystems, historical land clearing and the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disaster events. This project seeks to enable a revegetation and restauration to support the recovery and resilience of threatened species as well as more common ones: planted species will be used to reconnect and restore pockets of habitats to create a larger and more resilient ecosystem. The Swamps of the Fleurieu Peninsula, the home to a number of endangered plants and animals, are also important water filters to remove polluants and help with flood control. As such protecting it is a critical issue. The project provides a unique opportunity to improve and expand habitat for endemic threatened species.
