This project is supported by L'OCCITANE China.
Context
The combined effects of climate change and land exploitation (such as overgrazing and over-farming) have degraded the land in many places across the world, and the now desertified area is expanding at an astonishing rate. In China, sandstorms strike the northern and western regions and their surroundings each spring, destroying local homes and forcing many people to flee their native land. This project seeks to reforest the area to revitalize the land and block the sandstorms.
Supported Project
In 2024-2025, L'OCCITANE China supported the Shanghai Roots & Shoots Million Tree Project located in the Maowusu desert. It began in 2007 to give individuals and organisations an opportunity to fight climate change and to recover the biodiversity loss by planting local trees and shrubs. It also encompasses true community building as the local population is intimately involved with, and benefits from, every step of planting, maintaining, and monitoring the trees. In those areas, desertification is caused by a complex set of environmental and anthropogenic factors and is now threatening critical infrastructures and farmlands in the Yellow River corridor. The building of straw grids and the planting of shrubs contribute to stop Maowusu Sandy Land from expanding, restore the ecosystem and lessen the economic impact of desertification to Yellow River corridor region.
Some Figures
