Context
Ancient native woodlands are the UK’s most precious habitat and cover just 2.5% of the UK’s land. Their complex eco-systems are home to unique plants, fungi, insects and micro-organisms. Two woodlands are specifically concerned by this project with a focus on creation, protection and restoration. It first deals with the preservation of Langley Vale Wood in Surrey, in order to preserve its Wildflower Meadow's rare arable plants and enhance its biodiversity. The second one is located in Joyden’s Wood, a historic woodland near London, which is recognised as a designated County Wildlife Site and Biodiversity Opportunity Area.
Supported Project
In 2023-2024, L'OCCITANE en Provence UK supported Woodland Trust project focused on two sites: Joyden's Wood and Langley Vale. To manage Joyen's Wood's heathland, surveys are conducted in order to record the existing species mix and improve the conditions supporting the biodiversity benefits for those species. On the other hand, the invasive species are removed and fragmented healthland pockets are restored. Finally the Joyden's Wood project also tackles community engagement by delivering two educational project in the Wood to promote healhty habitat. In Langley Vale, the stress is mainly put on the Wildflower Meadow maintenance and management which requires soil topping, tilling and rolling as well as volunteer training.
In both sites, the restoration efforts strive to enrich the native habitats and support broadleaf regeneration while raising awareness of the UK's biodiversity issues.
