This project is supported by L'OCCITANE en Provence Canada.

Context

This project is implemented at various locations within Larose Forest, Ontario, Canada. The forest was established in 1928 when degraded and abandoned agricultural lands were acquired and trees were planted primarily to stabilize soils and mitigate flood and drought impacts. Since then, more than 11,000 hectares of property have been acquired and over 18 million trees have been planted. The goal is to naturalize the original tree plantations through forest operations and tree planting to increase natural regeneration.

Supported Project

In 2024-2025, L'OCCITANE en Provence Canada funded a One Tree Planted project located in the Larose Forest. Tree planting is being used there to facilitate the transition to forest types that existed prior to European settlement, to re-introduce or increase the abundance of species that were once more common to the region, to enhance wildlife habitat and to promote resilience in the face of climate change. It seeks to promote carbon sequestration, improve air and water quality, enhance the aesthetic appearance of the landscape, and boost community spirit and unity. The sites are cleared of debris and invasive species, while the tree species native to the area and adaptable to the climate conditions are identified. The trees are then planted by hand by seasoned planters: they are monitered and reports of their progress and impact are made. Tree planting is used to secure the health of the existing forests, while establishing new forests to improve the overall resilience of the landscapes.
