Context
The heather wood is an island of siliceous aeolian sediment in a predominantly limestone massif in the Lower Vivarais region. It is a unique geological and soil feature. The Salavas municipal forest covers around 650 hectares. The dominant stands are made up of maritime pine plantations of ‘Corsican’ origin planted in the 1950s. During the past few years, a significant decline has been observed, and the ‘Corsican’ origin of the pine makes it particularly sensitive to the mealy bug, which makes the trees more vulnerable. These conditions appear to be a threat for the future of the maritime pine.
Supported Project
From 2023 to 2025, L'OCCITANE en Provence's Manufactures supported a ONF's project acting for the plantation of Salzmann pine trees in the Salavas forest. The project aims at introducing Salzmann pine trees, an endemic and heritage species of the southern Ardèche, into the communal forest. This species is adapted to global warming and is renowned for the mechanical qualities of its wood. The goal of this plantation is also to diversify the forest and make it more resilient to climate change. The project will strive to protect the natural and forest heritage by preserving its soil, its biodiversity and water resources, while curbing erosion and improving air quality.
