Respecting Biodiversity

Born in the Alpes de Haute-Provence, L'OCCITANE has always been invested in the preservation of biodiversity. Historically committed to the preservation of natural heritage in Provence, the Foundation decided to take action internationally in 2019. While encouraging L'OCCITANE subsidiaries around the world to support local projects, the Foundation has been assisting projects in partnership with international NGOs specialising in environmental protection and community development since this year. Today, these projects are always pre-identified, studied and validated jointly by the Foundation and the subsidiaries, but they are financed exclusively by the latter, which thus maintain a privileged relationship with their local partners.  

In 2021, in order to involve its consumers in its solidarity actions, L'OCCITANE en Provence offered a solidarity product which profits were destined for the preservation of biodiversity. Thanks to the solidarity balm, 382,389 euros* were collected for biodiversity in 2021-2022.  

In 2023, the Foundation launched its first international call for projects to support multi-year programmes in biodiversity "hot spots", which are threatened ecosystems identified as critical areas for global biodiversity.   

According to the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), there are 36 global biodiversity hotspots. To be identified as such, the ecosystem must contain at least 1,500 plant species found nowhere else on Earth (making them both special and vulnerable to extinction), and must have lost at least 70% of its primary vegetation. Overexploitation of the forest, pollution and the introduction of non-native species have greatly weakened these ecosystems, which are now under threat.  

Protecting these areas means acting for the global preservation of biodiversity but also for the populations that depend on them.

To pursue its commitment and have a greater impact in preserving biodiversity, the L'OCCITANE Foundation is launching a new call for projects to support long-term projects in the territories that need it most.
