Context
The southeast region of Pará is one of the main areas of deforestation in the Amazon. The expansion of livestock farming, and mining endanger not only the primary forest and its biodiversity but the local communities as well.
Supported Project
In 2021-2022, L'OCCITANE Germany and the L'OCCITANE Foundation have partnered with Meli Bees to support their project aiming at developing agroforestry and native beekeeping activities enhancing the food security, livelihood and independence at the community level.
This project attends “Frei Henri”, an agrarian reform settlement established in 2017, home of low-income farmers who mostly sell their vegetables in street markets. As a young settlement, the community is especially motivated to innovate and develop sustainable activities.
The pilot will work with selected 20 “first mover” families starting by listening to their experiences and connection with nature, establish a trust base and create a joint vision. Then, the project will consist in implementing a nursery that will provide the necessary seedlings locally. Beekeeping will be introduced by jointly building a bee house with 20 beehives. On one hand, the community will be able to produce their own seedlings, plant native trees in a regenerative agroforestry model. On another hand, it will manage beehives of stingless bees in a sustainable productive manner. The project social and environmental goal is to develop a system that creates enhanced incomes for the farming families whilst regenerating the ecosystem.
