Context

Due to the successes of neonatology services in Kyrgyzstan, the survival rate of premature babies has improved. But in the struggle for the lives of premature babies, insufficient attention has been paid to the mechanisms of diagnostic and therapeutic measures for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). Due to the lack of equipment and experience in the management (screening, monitoring, diagnosis and treatment) of this pathology, ROP leads to blindness and low vision in children.

Supported Project

In 2021-2022, L'OCCITANE Kyrgyzstan and the L'OCCITANE Foundation have partnered with the Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan to support its project aiming to address the need of premature babies with retinopathy (ROP) in the country.

In the frame of the project, the Department of Ophthalmology of the National Center of Mother and Child Health Care will be equiped with an Ophthalmoscope, allowing the diagnosis and treatment of ROP. Two ophthalmologists will be trained for using the machine. The project will enable the Department to treat retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), making it the only clinic in the country with such capabilities.
