Context

Gauteng Province is the smallest province in South Africa. Both adults and children have poor access to health care, including eye care. Chilhood blindness is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness. That is why the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness' Vision 2020 Initiative and the Global Action Plan are working to reduce prventable blindness by 25% y 2029, and the South Africa National Council for the Blind is part of that effort.

Supported Project

In 2019-2020, L'OCCITANE South Africa and the L'OCCITANE Foundation are supporting the South African National Council for the Blind in its project to prevent blindness for children through early screening intervention, treatment of visual defects and prescription of eyeglasses in a high-needs school.

Ultimately, the project provides assistance to disadvantaged students with eye problems; treatment of minor infections in students, awareness of vision problems, and improved academic performance of the children who receive glasses.
