According to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), blindness and visual impairment are a real public health problem in developing countries, and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. 80% of cases of blindness can be prevented with relatively simple preventive measures and treatments. In Mali, blindness, with an estimated prevalence of 2.3% in 2010 according to the IAPB, is one of the main causes of disability.
