Context

According to the WHO, Ethiopia is one of the 56 countries with the highest prevalence of trachoma, an infectious conjunctivitis that can lead to blindness. Trachoma is also the second leading cause of blindness in the country.  It is the Amhara region that suffers the most with a prevalence rate of 62.2% due to a lack of drinking water as well as precarious sanitary conditions. It is indeed facing a shortage of appropriate treatments and medicines.

Supported Project

In 2017-2018, L'OCCITANE Italy and the L'OCCITANE Foundation supported CBM's project, which aimed at reducing the prevalence rate of Trachoma in the 3 districts of Sodo, Lanfuro and Dalocha (Selti areas) in Ethiopia. Through the implementation of the S.A.F.E strategy proposed by the OMS, the goal was to prevent the infection that causes long-term blindness as well as offering care services to those who are already infected by trachoma, through specific surgical techniques :
- Surgery : trichiasis surgery for people at risk of blindness.
- Antibiotics : antibiotics to trat the initial stage of the disease.
- Facial cleanness : education to clean and have a proper hygiene for face and body.
- Environnemental improvement of hygienic-environnement conditions.
