90% of people with visual deficiency in the world inhabit developing countries. In these regions, uncorrected refractive error is the main cause of deficiencies, whereas cataracts account for the majority of cases of blindness. Yet surgeries to correct cataracts and refractive errors are among the most affordable medical interventions.
In Burkina Faso, visual deficiencies are a public health issue, in particular in the mid-west region of the country, where 8% of people aged over 50 are affected by blindness and 17% live with low vision. A total of more than 1,400,000 people suffer froma visual deficiency, of which 230,000 are blind.
