Context

Recent stats tell us there are 3,527 registered optometrists in South Africa, of which only 235 are working in the public sector, trying to serve the need of almost 80% of the population (around 42 million people).

The lack of access to glasses results in a loss of millions for the SA’s economy. By providing glasses, VisionBox create opportunities for work and economic growth. With clear vision children can read and learn. Adults can also successfully participate in continuing education and workforce training.

 

Supported projet

In 2020, L'OCCITANE South Africa and the L'OCCITANE Foundation are supporting the VisionBox Foundation, previously known as Project Cat-Eye for its "Kids See Free" project. 

The VisionBox is a social franchise based on a scalable Optometry-in-a-Box concept. Containers are kitted out as fully functional optometry practices, and set up in townships to serve the people who need them most – at drastically reduced costs. Each practice is entirely owned by a black entrepreneur, who undergoes preparatory training and receives ongoing mentor-ship and business training once the practice is up and running. Practices run on strict guide-lines around consistency, profitability and sustainability, setting up young entrepreneurs for greatness. With all these elements designed, fine-tuned, and working together to improve vision and develop businesses; VisionBox’s ultimate goal is to improve lives
